AD6605 Design Projects quick sketch, site zoning/movement/layout plans
My first concept idea which linked to my senses theme. Randomly I have positioned different body parts which represent the senses around the site, in order to inspire some new design ideas and think more outside of the box in a
visual sense. I have also developed my tunnel idea and coloured it orange, to represent corten steel. I have added
a piece of Land Art onto Lower parting which has been inspired by precedent examples and to provide a viewing
platform for the Severn Bore.
Initial Vegetation plan - I attempted here to use vegetation to created funnels of movement. I used the
trees to direct the path moves through the forest from east Alney to Lower parting. I positioned
conceptual buildings either side of the trees to give pedestrians a reason to journey through them. These
main body’s of trees will be varied in their density, and may even become wet woodland areas to survive
during flooding.
Development of positioning and additional features - I have moved buildings around
slightly so that they are more evenly spaced apart, and that they have good clear views
of the site in front of them. I have developed a shape for a Quayside concept along the
eastern river bank facing Gloucester. I have acknowledged the position of the Cathedral
in relation to my Buildings and lined them up.
Space refinement and building positioning development. I have further progressed my design - the most significant change I have made is designed to implicate raised viewing platforms on either side of the A430, which
are lined up and allow pedestrians to see the Cathedral and the surrounding site. I have outlined how the tunnel will join onto the south side of the River Severn (with arrows protruding downwards - south). I have also
decided to position my Theatre in the east centre of Alney Island, facing lower parting - this creates a honey
pot site for visitors and gives this end of the site a fresh and exciting character. I have outlined the main path
routes with a thick red pen.
Simple sketch of a hydrology plan, based on my previous research
and how the water would move around my current design ideas.
Water flows north to south naturally down the sight, so I implicated a large retention lake in the centre of the site to allow overland
flow water to drain into and filter out. I also introduced a wetland
concept to my design, around the outside of the lake, which would
then make up the body of my site and occupy the east of the
site.
Rough sketch - initial zoning plan - Here I have tried to gain an understanding of the current existing areas of the site, broken up into much
simpler sections of colour. This allowed me to visually see where the
different habitats meet and how large each of them are.
Attempt to position infrastructure throughout the site - this relates to car parks buildings, which are then
linked by a path. I have positioned the buildings in correlation to their spaced out proximity to each other and
front-facing windows - these look onto specific features such as the Lower parting and the Cathedral. My first idea
of an enclosed tunnel along the south riverside has been implicated in the design. Whilst brainstorming I
came up with the idea of raised boardwalks to combat flooding.
Vegetation and zoning plan - Around the vegetation that I had previously placed on my plan, I have experimented with buildings and paths to link up between. This has created a Journey through the forest which has pull factors and routes to explore throughout. On the west river bank, I have placed a row of buildings, which could potentially become flood-resistant housing.
